National Aligned HIV/AIDS Initiative (NAHI)
FHI 360 is the prime recipient of the National Aligned HIV/AIDS Initiative (NAHI) grant from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund). The project’s goal is to reduce the incidence of new HIV infections, mortality and morbidity in Nigeria among the general population, while intensifying interventions for key and vulnerable populations.
The NAHI project builds on the results achieved through two previous Global Fund grants: Investing for Impact against Tuberculosis and HIV and Optimizing HIV Investments for Impact. It contributes directly to the attainment of Nigeria’s National HIV Strategic Plan by expanding access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.
FHI 360 provides overall technical and programmatic direction for the project and implements evidence-based strategies and services in collaboration with selected subrecipients.
The project focuses on reaching the following groups:
- The general population in two states
- Key populations, specifically female sex workers, men who have sex with men, transgender people and people who inject drugs, in 13 states
- Adolescent girls and young women in three states
In collaboration with the subrecipients, FHI 360 works to ensure:
- Optimization of service uptake at site level, including HIV testing, linkage to care, treatment initiation and prevention of mother-to-child transmission
- Optimization of HIV care cascades and clinical management processes for improved treatment outcomes, such as tuberculosis (TB) screening, TB-HIV management, early infant diagnosis and viral load monitoring and use of those results in clinical decision making
- Optimization of defaulter client tracking and retention on HIV care and treatment for both the general population and key populations
- Gap filling for harm reduction in seven states currently supported by the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief
